For many, Tenerife is not the first destination that springs to mind as a hiker’s treasure chest. However, Tenerife boasts richly diversified landscapes and splendid views, which make it a suitable choice for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy exploring the region’s offerings.

Until recently, British trekkers were seldom seen on trails, but are slowly discovering what other Europeans have known for years – that a Tenerife holiday break is a fantastic choice for walkers and hikers. Magnificent pathways cut through thick forests, plummeting gorges, and volcanic regions.

With such variety to hiking here, visitors can discover agricultural trails located in southern highland regions or the spectacular beauty of the Santiago Valley. Hikers can marvel at the rugged terrain of the Anaga Mountains or be enchanted by the charismatic La Orotava Valley. A unique experience to be savoured is the magnificent Mount Teide Crater region, which offers an insight to the south-western gems of the island.

There are some parts of the island’s coastline that are simply stunning, and many of the coast-hugging trails are easily accessible to most hikers. From secluded coves and cobbled stone paths to cliff top trails, the island has something for everyone to enjoy.

Regarded as the best area for hiking, the Anagas in the north-east of the island can only be described as stepping into nature’s masterpiece. With ancient forests and remote rural villages, this is a nature enthusiast’s paradise soaked with dramatic and breathtaking trails.

The Orotava Valley is another popular hiking region and, from the La Caldera, hikers are surrounded by pine forest trails and eucalyptus glades. This region offers views of the lush valley below and is forest hiking at its best.
