Enjoy Tenerife at Christmas

For a Christmas with a difference, there are few places better to celebrate than on the sun-soaked beaches of Tenerife. Swap shopping for cocktail sipping and cooking for dancing by kicking off the festive season somewhere a little special this year.

Tenerife’s traditional celebrations

If you’re thinking of taking a flight to Tenerife for Christmas, bear in mind that the celebrations are quite different to those in the UK – especially when it comes to timings. In Tenerife, the present giving frenzy doesn’t take place until the sixth of January, so if you do have some Christmas shopping to do, you’ll love how blissfully quiet the stores are in the run up to the twenty fifth.

On the sixth, Tenerife will celebrate the arrival of the three kings on the Feast of the Epiphany, giving you an extra excuse to celebrate.

Christmas Eve

On Christmas Eve, you may find your hotel expects you to eat a little earlier than usual, so the staff can get home to celebrate with their family. If you’re hoping for a leisurely meal, it may be wise to book with one of Tenerife’s many restaurants and to celebrate late into the night, be sure you choose bars near the busy resorts of the south coast.

If you’re still awake at midnight, see if you can join the locals by attending midnight mass, and if you’ve got real staying power, join the younger generations as they head to clubs, which will open at one and continue right through to the morning.

Christmas Day

When Christmas Day itself rolls around, you’ll find you have plenty of choice when it comes to the main meal of the day – whether you’re hoping to celebrate in Spanish style or sit down to turkey and the trimmings. Stretch your legs after your meal by taking a tour of local Beléns, these detailed scenes of village life in biblical times, spring up in towns around Christmas and are well worth a look.

Boxing Day

Perfect for lazing on the beach and sleeping off any excesses of the previous few days, Boxing Day isn’t considered a public holiday in Tenerife, so expect all of your favourite shops, restaurants and bars to be open as usual.

Book early for cheap flights to Tenerife and inexensive accommodation, and you could enjoy a Christmas holiday for less than you’d spend organising the festivities at home – as well as a sun tan into the bargain.
