For the discerning traveler, a memorable holiday involves more than picturesque beaches and ample shopping opportunities. The most satisfying moments of a trip usually involve experiences that are anything but ordinary; things you won’t find at home. Seek out attractions that are unique to your destination, whether it is landscapes, historical sites, or sporting fun. Tenerife sets itself apart from other tourist hubs for a bevy of reasons, but one of the most overlooked charms of the island is its wildlife. You will find many opportunities to get acquainted with the animals of Tenerife, and by scouting out your options, you’ll find a park, zoo, or aquarium that is best suited for you.

In the steep hills above the resort of Los Cristianos, you’ll find an attraction that most Tenerife experts would call a must: Las Aguilas Jungle Park. With 75,000 square meters of wild and rugged gardens, this animal emporium includes virtually all species native to the island. If you’re a fan of the primates, Las Aguilas has all breeds. If you’re into felines, you can feast your eyes on lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars. Many other species are represented, and you can even get up close and personal at one of the many daily animal demonstrations.

Santa-Cruz-parkIf you are staying near Puerto de la Cruz, you might want to check out Loro Parque. You could spend a whole day at this animal park that attracts more than 1 million visitors yearly, as they have exhibits and demonstrations of all varieties. A few of its more unique attractions are the Penguin Island, Dolphinorium, and Orca Ocean. A short drive from Loro Parque is the Monkey Park, another popular option for the animal lover. A breeding center for all of the rarest monkeys, this small zoo allows its visitors the opportunity to interact with primates, lizards and other small island creatures.

Indeed, many of the best Tenerife attractions are those tailored to the unusual wildlife of the region. You’ll have the ability to get acquainted with some beautiful and rare breeds, and you’ll learn more about many species that ruled the island long before humans came along. Most of these zoos and parks are located in close proximity to resort districts. You won’t have to go far for an experience of a lifetime.
